What Are Heat Pumps? A heat pump is a device used to transfer heat from one place to another. It works simply by using a small amount of energy to move heat from a cooler area to a warmer area, making the hotter area warmer and the colder area cooler. This process is accomplished by using a refrigerant that circulates in a closed loop system that includes an evaporator, compressor, condenser, and expansion valve. In heating mode, the heat pump takes heat from the outside air, the ground or water and transfers it into the building to provide warmth. In cooling mode, it removes heat from inside the building and releases it outside to provide cool air.
